This book is not a survey similar to other histories of painting; it often places emphasis on forgotten or little-known artists with individual styles. Of course, tracing the history of any period of drawing and watercolours means tracing the history of all art of that period; again, emphasis changes, however, and in this book considerable attention is given to posters and theatrical designs, areas in which watercolours are used extensively.
