A view of a vanishing world is afforded by the life stories of three women trained in the severe and strictured province of the geisha. The system whereby a poor but promisingly beautiful and talented Japanese girl could become at once an individual sacrifice and worldly success could also produce women of temporal power and tempered spirit honoured in their ordained orbit.
