There are previous owners stamps on various pages throughout the book and there is staining, foxing and toning also but the text is legible. There is a previous owner’s illegible bookplate on the front cover of the book.

François-André Danican Philidor,  was both a French chess player and musical prodigy was also regarded as the best chess player of his age. His work was  considered a standard chess manual for at least a century. It was the first chess book to explain the openings, the middle game, and the general strategy of chess. The book claimed that “les pions sont l’âme du jeu”, a phrase that became widely known as ‘the pawns are the soul of chess’, a maxim known to chess players ever since.
