154pp. b/w ills. Very good copy. 1st ed. The Sydney University Women’s Sports Association (SUWSA) was established in 1910 when 24 women joined, but male students did not want any ‘Newtown Tarts’ using their facilities, so they built their own.
Slight wear to edges and spattering of very mild foxing to pages.
Jessie Street recalled, “they called us Newtown tarts because we played boys’ games (hockey) in skirts that were shortened to six inches above the ground and we lived close to Newtown which was in those days a rather slummy area.”
