Description

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Unamed (illustrator). First edition. A first edition copy of F. E. Hyde’s work of British maritime history. This work charts the early life of the Blue Funnel shipping company and its founder Alfred Holt. In the publisher’s original cloth binding. A history on the life of Alfred Holt’s shipping company, first named Alfred Holt and Co, later becoming Blue Funnel. The company was founded in the mid-19th century and was based in Liverpool England. This work charts the history of the company from its formation up until the year 1914, though the company continued to be in operation throughout and up until the late 1980s. The company was incredibly important during the first and second world wars with many ships being used for military service. Forward thinking and progressive, Blue Funnel was the first U.K. shipping company to hire a female marine engineer. Lacking the original dustwrapper. Written by Francis E. Hyde, with the assistance of J. R. Harris. An interesting work of British maritime history. In the publisher’s original blue cloth binding. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Small damp staining marks to the front board, and another to the rear board. Light spots to the fore-edge. Ink inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional spot, heavier towards the binding of the title page.
