First edition thus. Illus. with engraved 12 frontispieces and 12 extra title page vignettes drawn by C. Stanfield and engraved by E. Finden. 12mo. Originally to be 8 volumes, changed to 10 with the addition of new material, and thus new title pages were issued. Spines a bit darkened, extremities rubbed, some scuffing to spines ( more so on Volume 2), volume labels chipped, one title label heavily chipped, bindings tight, leaves crisp and clean, overall still a very good set but for the chipped labels. Three-quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, six gilt decorated compartments, with red morocco title label and black morocco volume label, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Some moisture damage to front pages – but still intact.
